Bowel perforation after ingestion of magnets

Case contributed by Dr Tim Luijkx

Presentation

Acute onset of profuse vomiting (over 40 times). No diarrhea or fevers. Bowel sounds hypoactive and diffusely tender abdomen with peritonism. Bowel obstruction?

Patient Data

Age: 2 years
Gender: Male

Multiple magnets lining up, misleadingly appearing to be in the same bowel loop.

Case Discussion

The patient was confirmed to have a bowel obstruction with perforation. Operative findings revealed that the magnets were in different bowel loops.

This case proves that swallowed magnets should not be underestimated as a possible cause of significant abdominal pathology.
