Brain and skull metastases from lung carcinoma

Case contributed by Ammar Haouimi
Diagnosis almost certain

Presentation

Headaches with altered level of consciousness in a patient treated for lung carcinoma.

Patient Data

Age: 60 years
Gender: Male

Numerous scattered enhancing intra-axial lesions of various sizes, disseminated in both cerebellar and cerebral hemispheres and brainstem with surrounding vasogenic edema. Some of them show intrinsic high signal on T1 and low signal on GE sequences (hemorrhagic). A small enhancing intradiploic lesion is also noted in the right parietal region with adjacent dural enhancement suggestive of skull metastasis.

Case Discussion

MRI features of numerous enhancing intra-axial lesions involving both cerebellar and cerebral hemispheres and brainstem with right parietal skull vault lesion in a patient treated for lung carcinoma, most consistent with brain and skull metastases.
