Brassiere artifact

Case contributed by Ian Bickle
Diagnosis certain

Foreign body aspiration.

Patient Data

Age: 25 years
Gender: Female

Brassiere artifact.

No ingested radio-opaque foreign body.

Heart size normal. Lungs clear.

Case Discussion

Except in extreme emergencies all attempts should be made to remove any potential clothing causing artifact before imaging.

In females, the patient is usually asked to remove their underwired brassiere due to the artifact from the wires and clips.  This is particularly important if the query is to look for a ingested foreign body which may be obscured by components of the brassiere or for that matter any clothing.
