A 45-year-old woman with palpable masses after autologous fat transplantation few years ago.

Patient Data

Age: 45 year old
Gender: Female

Bilateral scattered innumerable well circumscribed opacities are seen showing mixed density within.

Bilateral variable shapes (oval/lobular/irregular shaped) well marginated, complex echoic masses appearing as cysts with echogenic internal bands, debris and mural nodules.

Case Discussion

Sonographic and mammographic findings of bilateral breasts complicated cysts with internal echogenic content. The diagnosis is dependent on the clinical history of subcutaneous injection for breast augmentation.

Breast augmentation is performed for cosmetic purposes and for the filling of defects from breast resection for breast cancer. Autologous breast augmentation occurs via fat injection into breast tissue. Complications include infection, fat necrosis, and calcification. Radiologically it will appear as mixed density opacities on the mammogram and complex cysts with internal echogenic content on ultrasound.
