Screening mammogram. Found to have multiple masses, stable on follow up.
Patient Data
Dense lobulated superficial mass with calcification at the right axillary tail.
Similar mass in the right axilla.
There is a heterogenous poorly defined hypoechoic mass in the upper outer quadrant correlating with the palpable area in the right breast which measures 1.5 x 0.8 x 1.1 cm. Similar mass noted at the right axilla measures 2 x 0.7 cm correlating with the palpable area on the mammogram.
The appearances are suggestive of a benign vascular lesion, e.g. haemangioma.
Case Discussion
A mass appearing oval or lobular in shape with well-circumscribed or microlobulated margins on mammography and sonography, and in a superficial location, makes the radiologist think of a possible diagnosis of haemangioma. Image-guided biopsy is reliable to rule out any malignant or premalignant component and therefore avoid a surgical excision.
