Breast implant - unilateral

Case contributed by Dr Ian Bickle

Presentation

Admitted with central chest pain. Previous history of left breast malignancy.

Patient Data

Age: 60 years
Gender: Female
X-ray

Rounded density projected over the left thoracic cavity which is parallel to the breast fold.

Normal right breast outline.

Case Discussion

A unilateral breast implant (prosthesis projects over the left chest) augmentation having been performed following a mastectomy for a breast malignancy.

It is far less common to identify a unilateral implant, as so many of them are for primary cosmetic purposes and so involve both breasts.
