Presentation

Right breast palpable mass on physical exam.

Patient Data

Age: 65 years
Gender: Female
mammography

A large hetero-dense mass with an irregular and spiculated margin is noted in the UOQ of the right breast that causes surrounding parenchymal distortion. In addition, a rounded, slightly lobulated mass is observed posterosuperior to the mentioned mass. (BI-RADS 5)

A part of a large lymphadenopathy is also evident in the right axillary regions in the MLO view.

Mild skin thickening is present in the peri-areolar regions of the right breast.

pathology

The patient underwent an ultrasound-guided core needle biopsy.

Diagnosis: Breast mucinous carcinoma

Case Discussion

Mucinous carcinoma of the breast is a subtype of invasive ductal carcinoma that tends to occur in older women. On mammography, the presence of mucin results in a low-density and relatively well-defined lobular mass. Calcifications are rare in pure mucinous types.
