Note the presence of a  hyperdense tubular structure descending from the hilium to the right lower lobe, with a rounded ending. This finding was associated to a hyperinflated area of the lower right lung. The rounded ending of this tubular structure corresponds to a bronchial atresia filled with fluid and mucinous content.

Case Discussion

Congenital bronchial atresia (CBA) is a rare congenital abnormality which usually presents incidentally in asymptomatic young male adults. It is caused by an interruption of a lobar, segmental or subsegmental bronchus with associated peripheral mucus impaction. It is associated to hyperinflation of the obstructed lung segment.
