Bronchial atresia

Case contributed by Dr Henry Knipe

Presentation

Haemoptysis.

Patient Data

Age: 50 years
Gender: Male
CT

Branching water-density opacity in the right lower lobe with surrounding hyperlucency. Isolated anomaly.

Case Discussion

Branching opacity is most in keeping with a bronchocoele. No evidence of continuation with the remainder of the bronchial tree, and surrounding hyperlucency suggests congenital bronchial atresia with a secondary bronchocoele. This is likely incidental to presentation, and no cause for haemoptysis is seen.
