Buckle rib fracture on ultrasound

Presentation

Blunt trauma to right sided lower chest wall 4 days earlier.

Patient Data

Age: 50 years
Gender: Male

There is no obvious cortical breach involving the right sided ribs.

Split screen images without and with compression at site of pain pointed by patient are obtained. Image without compression shows normal contour of rib cortex. Image with compression at same site, shows rib cortical buckling.

Case Discussion

This case represents the importance of ultrasound in the case of rib fracture with a negative radiograph. Additionally, it shows the importance of compression to demonstrate a buckle fracture.
