Presentation

Abdominal pain with distension and weight loss.

Patient Data

Age: 12 years
Gender: Male
ct

Enlarged spleen length (~12 cm) with homogeneous density.

Intraperitoneal lymphadenopathy mainly of periportal and celiac-mesenteric location (largest measures 16 x 13 mm).

Retroperitoneal lymphadenopathy of para-aortic and aortocaval location (largest measures 19 x 15 mm).

Bilateral common iliac, external and internal iliac lymphadenopathy (largest measures 28 x 22 mm).

Minimal intraperitoneal effusion.

CT features of splenomegaly and lymphadenopathy at multiple intra-and retroperitoneal sites, pathologically proven as Burkitt lymphoma.

Burkitt lymphoma is considered the most common type of non-Hodgkin lymphoma in childhood (40%).  It is considered endemic in parts of Africa (rates are up to 50 times higher than in the USA).
