Caecal volvulus

Case contributed by Dr Alexandra Stanislavsky

Elderly lady presenting with abdominal pain and distension

Patient Data

Age: 80
Gender: Female

Plain abdominal x-rays demonstrate several dilated small bowel loops, and a distended hollow viscus in the left upper quadrant.  Whilst this appears somewhat like a stomach, inspection of the erect images demonstrate the stomach (and hiatus hernia) superior to this.

CT of the abdomen confirms a caecal volvulus, with a whirl sign on the axial images.  The ileocaecal junction is nicely displayed at the right superior aspect of the rotated caecum.

Case Discussion

Nicely demonstrated case of caecal volvulus, with a whirl sign .
