Presentation
Acute abdominal pain and vomiting
Patient Data
Grossly distended segment of large bowel loop is noted occupying the central region of abdomen.
Rest of the large bowel loops are collapsed.
No signs of perforation or pneumatosis.
Small bowel loops are not dilated.
Grossly dilated segment of bowel loop, with haustration indicating large bowel loop, is noted in the central region of abdomen and towards left upper quadrant, having a closed loop obstruction, suggestive of cecal volvulus.
No complications like perforation or ischemia or pneumatosis.
Case Discussion
Cecal volvulus is described as twisting of cecum around its mesentery.
Complications include ischemia, perforation and peritonitis.
The patient immediately underwent laparotomy, identifying the cecal volvulus and a right hemicolectomy was done, and the patient recovered well from surgery.
