Calcaneal avulsion

Case contributed by Mr Andrew Murphy

Presentation

Twisted left ankle unable to walk.

Patient Data

Age: 30 years
Gender: Male
Modality: X-ray

There is an avulsion fracture of the anterior aspect of the left calcaneum, additionally, there are small, well corticated bone fragments anterior to the lateral malleolus as well as some osteophytes around the distal tibia that are most likely from previous trauma.

Modality: Annotated image

Acute avulsion fracture of the left calcaneum anterior process.

Case Discussion

Avulsion fractures of the anterior process of the calcaneum are easily missed in plain radiography, most definitely something to keep as a final review area when assessing the 'rolled ankle now cannot walk' radiographs.
