Presentation
A young male presented with foot pain, especially in the evening and at night. No history of severe trauma.
Patient Data
MRI of the ankle reveals extensive bone marrow edema at the calcaneus. A focal subcortical well-defined ovoid lesion at the superolateral aspect of the calcaneus. The lesion shows a mildly hyperintense signal on T1WI and a hypointense signal on PDWI.
A mild retrocalcaneal bursal effusion was also noted.
A small rounded well-defined nidus at the superolateral aspect of the calcaneus with mild surrounding sclerosis. The findings are most suggestive of osteoid osteoma.
Case Discussion
Osteoid osteoma is a benign bone tumor. This tumor often arises at the diaphysis or metaphysis of long bones. Osteoid osteoma in short bones such as tarsal bones is a rare entity. CT is a superior method for demonstrating a well-defined nidus.
