Patient Data

Age: 14 years
Gender: Male
x-ray

On oblique view, calcaneus and navicular bones are seen in close proximity with accompanying cortical irregularity and sclerosis, consistent with fibrous-cartilaginous tarsal coalition

Case Discussion

The calcaneus and navicular do not normally articulate. In osseous coalition, fusion of both bones are seen. In fibrous or cartilaginous coalition, these bones are seen in close proximity with irregular surfaces and some sclerosis. Calcaneonavicular coalitions are best depicted on oblique radiographs. On lateral and AP views, some indirect signs may be seen suggestive of calcaneonavicular coalition.
