Presentation
A 13-year-old boy with a 6-year history of right foot pain presented with limited ankle range of motion, strength, and weight-bearing intolerance. Conservative treatment has been unsuccessful. On examination, he had a flat pronated foot, mild steppage gait, and rigid subtalar and midfoot with limited ankle joint mobility. No significant ankle instability was detected.
Patient Data
Elongation of the anterior calcaneal process with resulting narrowing of the space between the calcaneus and navicular and synchondrosis formation.
There are areas of irregularity and T2 hyperintensity (indicative of edema) on either side of the synchondrosis.
Case Discussion
These radiological findings are consistent with a classic example of a fibrous calcaneonavicular coalition with associated edema.
Following surgical excision of the calcaneonavicular coalition, the patient experienced a notable improvement in the mobility and stability of the subtalar and talonavicular joints.
