Calcified pleural plaque

Complaining of breathlessness and chest pain since the last week

Age: 85 years
Gender: Male

X-ray chest pa view shows diffuse pleural thickening with calcification in right hemithorax with obliteration of right costophrenic angle. Mild cardiomegaly is seen. Scoliosis of the dorsal spine is seen.

Case Discussion


Calcification of pleura most commonly occurs due to previous hemothorax,  empyema, or asbestosis.

In asbestosis, costophrenic angles and apices are typically spared.
