Calcified pleural plaques - asbestos exposure

Case contributed by Dr Ian Bickle

Presentation

Retired blue collar worker. Chest pain.

Patient Data

Age: 70 years
Gender: Male

Small bilateral mid-zone calcified pleural plaques.

Additional plaques on the medial aspect of the mediastinum overlying the left ventricular outline and on the right hemidiaphragm.

The lungs are hyperinflated. Heart size normal.

Case Discussion

The diaphragm is a favourite place for the plaques to form. The plaques indicate exposure and in so the potential risk of mesothelioma, the the plaques themselves are not pre-malignant or prone to dysplasia.
