Calcified thoracic disc herniation

Presentation

Female patient with numbness in both feet and gait problems starting 5 days ago. A calcified thoracic disc herniation Th5/6 is already known for 6 years but has not been treated so far.

Age: 71
Gender: Female
Modality: MRI

Sagittal T2w image of the thoracic spine. There is a mountain like hypointense, calcified disc herniation with compression of the dural sac and thoracic spinal cord. The extend of cord compression is better depicted on the transverse (axial) T2w image. The mountain-like appearance of this calcified disc herniation led to the description of the Matterhorn sign.

Modality: CT

65-year old female patient. CT shows a calcified thoracic disc herniation.
