Candida esophagitis

Presentation

Patient with dysphagia and odynophagia of one month of evolution to liquids and solids. History of AIDS.

Patient Data

Age: 35 years
Gender: Male
Fluoroscopy

Irregular esophagus or "shaggy" appearance caused by thick plaques with trapping of barium between them and decrease of lumen with irregular contours in the lower third.

Case Discussion

One week later the brushing of the plaques by upper endoscopy yeast and pseudohyphae were demonstrated confirming a characteristic Candida infection.

The diagnosis of candida esophagitis was proven.
