Irregular esophagus or "shaggy" appearance caused by thick plaques with trapping of barium between them and decrease of lumen with irregular contours in the lower third.

A: The oesophagus.
Q: What is the most common cause of infectious oesophagitis ? show answer
A: Candida oesophagitis: Candida albicans is the most common cause of infectious esophagitis.
Q: What does "shaggy oesophagus" describe? show answer
A: "Shaggy oesophagus" is secondary to innumerable coalescent pseudomembranes and plaques, with trapping of barium between the lesions.
Case Discussion
One week later the brushing of the plaques by upper endoscopy yeast and pseudohyphae were demonstrated confirming a characteristic Candida infection.
The diagnosis of candida esophagitis was proven.
