Cannula mimicking foreign body

Case contributed by Andrew Murphy

Left axillary chest pain for one week.

Patient Data

Age: 30 years
Gender: Male

Radiodense material between ribs 10 and 11 overlying the left hemidiaphragm is concerning for a foreign body.

Annotated image

The foreign body is a cannula in the mid cubital fossa projected over the lung.

Case Discussion

This case demonstrates how a difference in radiographic technique can influence the appearance of a simple PA chest x-ray. Often patients are required to either 'hug' the upright board or place their limbs away from the chest. This patient, however, had both arms by his side, projecting a cannula over the lung.
