Presentation

Known renal cell cancer, for metastatic workup

Patient Data

Age: 45 years
Gender: Female
x-ray

Numerous bilateral lung nodules and masses are noted, suspicious for metastatic disease.

No effusion or pneumothorax.

ct

There are numerous well defined rounded bilateral lung nodules and masses measuring up to 6 x 4.5 cm containing areas of necrosis, compatible with lung metastasis (cannonball metastases). Dilated tortuous vessels are also noted within some of the masses, which raise the possibility of AV fistulas and shunting.

Case Discussion

The main differential diagnosis for cannonball type metastasis is choriocarcinoma and renal cell carcinoma (RCC). This case was metastasis from a known left clear cell RCC.
