Carcinoma right breast

Case contributed by Dr Garth Kruger

A 53 yr old woman feels a lump in her right breast. Has had annual mammograms forever.

Patient Data

Age: 53 years
Gender: Female
Modality: Mammography

The MLO view of the right breast looked "normal"

Modality: Annotated image

On the tomosynthesis series look what pops up on review ......

Modality: Ultrasound

8 mm IDC confirmed on biopsy.. This was the lesion the patient palpated.

Case Discussion

The initial mammogram was not that dense: Volpara B density.

Intuitively I suppose most would suspect tomosynthesis will add value in the really dense breast. This case shows its value in a relatively fatty breast.

Food for thought.
