Carcinoma right breast - value of tomosynthesis

Case contributed by Dr Garth Kruger

Palpable lump in the right breast.

Patient Data

Age: 55 years
Gender: Female

This is the conventional MLO view right breast. Read as normal.

Look what pops up on the tomosynthesis view - an asymmetric density (arrow). The right CC view was normal.

A small carcinoma of the right breast confirmed at biopsy.

Case Discussion

The point here is the original mammogram was not really that dense. The common wisdom seems to suggest that tomosynthesis will find lesions in the predominantly dense glandular breast. This case seems to suggest it may even be of value in less dense breasts. Remember its all about early diagnosis.
