Cardiac bronchus

Case contributed by Frank Gaillard
Diagnosis certain
ct

Coronal reconstruction of a chest CT demonstrates a small blind ending stump extending inferiorly and medially from the bronchus intermedius. There is no associated mass or consolidation.

Findings are those of an incidental cardiac bronchus.

Case Discussion

A cardiac bronchus is a rare variant, found in only ~0.3% of individuals. It arises from the bronchus intermedius just after the bifurcation of the right upper lobe bronchus and in about half of cases it aerates lung parenchyma.
