Carotid body tumour

Case contributed by Dr Arthur Daire

Swelling on left side of neck for 1 year. Systemically stable. He was initially evaluated with ultrasound which demonstrated a very hypervascular mass situated at the right common carotid artery bifurcation, spraying the bifurcation.

Patient Data

Age: 19
Gender: Male

The study demonstrated a T2 hyperintense mass  with prominent  flow voids, giving the "salt and pepper" sign typical of a paraganglioma (glomus tumor). In this case, the position of the tumour is classic of the carotid body tumour. It was difficult to identify  the main feeder but likely branches of the external carotid artery.

Case Discussion

This case demonstrated very well the "salt and pepper" sign  seen in paraganglioma (glomus tumours). This patient is yet to undergo surgery and such histology is not available to confirm the diagnosis.
