Carpal fractures - smart watch impaction

Presentation

Fall from a dirt bike at 60 Km/h. Patient wearing smart watch, states smart watch directly impacted his wrist during fall.

Patient Data

Age: 25 years
Gender: Male

There is an oblique fracture through both the capitate and the trapezoid. The fracture fragments are posteriorly displaced.

There are fractures through both the capitate and the trapezoid that are longitudinal in nature, with multiple associated fragments.

Case Discussion

The following case occurred due to the patient's large smart watch directly impacting the dorsum of the wrist during a high velocity crash, presenting a unique fracture pattern. The patients smart watch was not damaged during the accident, however based on personal experience will not be wearing one during motorcycling in the future.
