Carpal ossification

Case contributed by Jeremy Jones
Diagnosis certain
x-ray

A 3-year-old bone age. The capitate, hamate, distal radial epiphysis and a small triquetral ossification center are visible.

x-ray

A 4-year-old bone age. The capitate, hamate, triquetral, and a small lunate ossification center are visible.

x-ray

An 8-year-old bone age. All the epiphyses approach the width of the diaphyses. Capitate, hamate, triquetral, and lunate are developing, while scaphoid, trapzium, and trapezoid ossification centers started to appear.

x-ray

A 10-year-old bone age. The scaphoid, trapezium, and trapezoid bones are developing. Meanwhile, the width of the middle and distal epiphyses are greater than the width of the middle and distal metaphyses.

x-ray

A 13-year-old bone age. The trapezium bone started to overlap with the trapezoid bone. Do note the shape of the scaphoid bone. Ossification center for the pisiform started to appear.

x-ray

A 15-year-old bone age. Do note the shape of the scaphoid bone. The epiphyses started to fuse beginning from the distal phalanges, followed by metacarpals, proximal phalanges, and middle phalanges.

Case Discussion
