Caseous mitral annular calcification

Presentation

An elderly female with the known history of chronic coronary artery disease and arterial hypertension presented with shortness of breath.

Patient Data

Age: 65 years
Gender: Female

CT demonstrates large tumefactive homogenous calcification measured 28 x 22 x 20 mm in the posterior aspect of the mitral valve annulus.

Findings most keeping with caseous mitral annular calcification.

There is also cardiomegaly and atherosclerotic calcifications along the thoracic aorta and coronary arteries.

Mitral annulus calcification is one of the most common cardiac calcification.

Caseous calcification of the mitral valve annulus is a rare variant of mitral annular calcification with a characteristic imaging appearance.
