Catheter drainage of tuberculous pericarditis

Fever and breathlessness.

Patient Data

Age: 14 years
Gender: Male

Drainage catheters in situ.


Opaque hemithorax on left side.

Left side intercostal drainage catheter in situ.

Drainage catheters in situ. Pericardial effusion seen.

Case Discussion

14 year old child with tubercular pleural and pericardial effusion.

Decortication was performed on left side. Pericardial effusion was aspirated with a wide bore needle on 3 occasions, it reaccumulated immediately.

Ultimately a 8F pigtail catheter was inserted under ultrasound guidance.

Pericardial fluid yielded - high adenosine deaminase and lymphocytosis.

Patient gradually improved on anti-tubercular therapy.
