Mandible.
There is a lucent expanding lesion seen in the mandible containing high density material.
It has resulted in significant bone expansion in this region, there is no cortical break or associated soft tissue abnormality.
The appearances are in keeping with a cementoma / ossifying fibroma.
Fibrous dysplasia may have a similar radiological appearance
CT Mandible confirms the presence of high density ossification in this benign expanding mass. There is no associated cortical break and no soft tissue component is seen
Case Discussion
The mandibular expanding lesion is benign in appearance.
The ossification and bone matrix formation as well as its expansion make cemento-ossifying fibroma the most likely diagnosis.
Mandibular fibrous dysplasia can also be considered in the differential diagnosis.
These are uncommon tumors, usually presenting in the 20-40 years age group, more commonly seen in women. Symptoms are usually associated with bone expansion.
They may also occur in the maxilla and elsewhere in the head and neck region.
