Cephalohaematoma

Case contributed by Dr Jeremy Jones

Presentation

10 day old child. Hit on the head by sibling. Concern for large lump.

Patient Data

Age: 10 days
Gender: Male
X-ray

There is a large subcutaneous swelling over the left side of the head near the vertex.  Linear calcification is demonstrated.

Case Discussion

The obstetric history was of ventouse delivery and on further questioning, there had always been a lump on the child's head.

The radiographic features here are classical of a cephalohaematoma that has been the result of the ventouse delivery. It would have been present at, or shortly after birth. They initially demonstrated internal calcification (classically perpendicular to the calvarium) and slowly resolve over time.
