Incidental finding

Patient Data

Age: 35
Gender: Female

There is an ovoid 13mm x 9mm density within the  left external capsule/claustrum/extreme capsule - just lateral to the posterior limb of the left internal capsule. Associated punctate calcifications. There is minimal, if any localized mass effect within the region of hemorrhage. No further evidence of acute hemorrhage or CT evidence of acute infarction. Ventricles and basal cisterns are normal.

Conclusion

Partly calcified left temporal lobe lesion as described, possibly hemorrhagic. Differentials include an underlying AVM or cavernous malformation and neoplasm, primary or metastatic.

Cavernoma of the left insula and associated developmental venous anomaly. No evidence of recent hemorrhage.

Occasional small foci of increased signal intensity in the left hemisphere consistent with small vessel ischemia.

Case Discussion

Typical appearances of a cavernous malformation with associated DVA, commonly seen together.
