Cerebral venous infarction due to thrombosis of straight sinus and cerebral veins

Presentation

Sudden coma.

Patient Data

Age: 45 years
Gender: Female

Diffuse bilateral basal ganglia hypodensity with loss of grey-white matter differentiation. Small hemorrhagic foci in the head of the right caudate nucleus. Periventricular white matter edema around the occipital horn of left lateral ventricle.

Hyperdense straight venous sinus, vein of Galen and both internal cerebral veins which on non-contrast CT represents acute thrombosis.

Case Discussion

CT appearance of cerebral venous infarction due to acute thrombosis of straight venous sinus and cerebral veins. Practical point: acute thrombus on non-contrast CT is indicated by a hyperdense vessel, both in arteries and veins.
