Cherubism

Case contributed by Dr Andrés Morfin Vela

Presentation

Progressive bilateral cheek swelling.

Patient Data

Age: 4 years
Gender: Male
CT

There is an expansive and lytic process affecting the maxilla and mandible in its entirety with preservation of the mandibular condyles. Inside the process, there’s a trabecular bony pattern with a “Bubble soap” appearance.

The volume rendering images beautifully represent these characteristics.

Case Discussion

Cherubism is an autosomal dominant disease with 100% penetrance in males. The boy's father has cherubism.

It's considered to be a variant of fibrous dysplasia, but histopathologically it is same as a giant cell granuloma.
