Knife penetrates through the lateral left manubrium and extends into the prevascular space with associated small anterior mediastinal hematoma and small pneumomediastinum. The knife tip penetrates the left upper lobe with surrounding contusion and small pneumothorax. Otherwise, no visceral or vascular injury. Trace left hemothorax.

Case Discussion

Imaging in this case of a chest stab wound was useful to rule out vascular and visceral injuries (besides the pneumothorax and lung contusion). Scroll through the images to appreciate how close the knife track is to the aorta.
