Patient Data

Age: Child

Crowding of foramen magnum contents, suggestive of tonsillar ectopia (Chiari I malformation).

Mildly dilated ventricular system.

Midline bone defect at the cranial vault.

Tonsillar descend through foramen magnum, representing Chiari I malformation.

Focal midline vascular channels in the scalp connected to superior sagittal sinus by a traversing vessel through a midline cranial vault defect, representing sinus pericranii.

Mildly dilated ventricular system.

Extensive syrinx involving the imaged cervical and dorsal segments of the spinal cord.

Case Discussion

Imaging appearances of Chiari I malformation with extensive cervico-dorsal syrinx and sinus pericranii.

The most common complication of Chiari I is syringomyelia seen in 25-50% and most commonly seen in the cervical cord. Other less common complications include hydrocephalus.
