Chiari I malformation with syrinx

Presentation

Muscle weakness.

Age: 5 years
Gender: Female

MRI cervical spine

There is cerebellar tonsils descent through foramen magnum compressing the cervicomedullary junction with resultant whole spinal cord syrinx. No associated hydrocephalic changes.

The tonsillar herniation is estimated to be 7.2 mm below the foramen magnum (Chiari 1 malformation >6 mm).

Case Discussion

Child with a Chiari 1 malformation and resulting extensive syrinx involving the whole spinal cord (Holocord presentation).
