Chiari II malformation

Child with a midline lower thoracic - upper lumbar spinal defect. MRI for further investigation.

Patient Data

Age: 11 months
Gender: Male


  1. tonsillar herniation, 15mm below foramen magnum.
  2. small posterior fossa.
  3. hydrocephalus: extensive.
  4. absent corpus callosum.


  1. large thoracolumbar cystic mass with cord and nerve root within it (Myelomeningocele).
  2. syringomyelia in mid-thoracic cord.
  3. no tethered cord.

Case Discussion

The findings are consistent with Chiari II malformation.
