Choriocarcinoma liver metastases

Case contributed by Dr Michael P Hartung

Recent removal of ovarian mass.

Patient Data

Age: 25 years
Gender: Female

Numerous liver masses of various sizes, many with irregular peripheral enhancement.

Left oophorectomy with left lower quadrant descending colostomy.

Long, tubular pelvic abscess.

Case Discussion

The patient underwent left oophorectomy for a mass which invaded the sigmoid colon, confirmed as choriocarcinoma. Surgery complicated by a pelvic abscess.

Extensive liver masses which irregular peripheral enhancement. At first glance, the appearance somewhat overlaps with cavernous hemangiomas. However, choriocarcinomas are known to produce highly vascular metastases such as these.
