Complete loss of vision in the right eye
Patient Data
A well defined intra-occular soft tissue mass is seen arising from the superior aspect of the right eye globe, eliciting high T1 and low T2 signal intensity with homogenous post contrast enhancement. It is seen measuring about 1.8 x 1.8 x 1.4 cm along its maximum axial and CC dimensions respectively. Associated retinal detachment is seen displaying intermediate T1 and low T2 signal intensity. No extra-ocular or intra-cranial extensions seen.
Case Discussion
Choroidal melanomas are the most common primary tumor of the adult eye.
Uveal melanomas arise from the ciliary body or the choroid.
Choroidal or ciliary body tumors are only identified incidentally on fundoscopy or as a result of retinal detachment or advanced disease.
Systemic metastases may be widespread (liver > lung > bone > kidney > brain> breast). They can metastasize late to the liver, with delays of 10 to 15 year from the presentation.
