Choroid plexus carcinoma

Case contributed by Frank Gaillard
Diagnosis certain

Presentation

Increasing head circumference.

Patient Data

Age: 3 months
Gender: Male

Transcranial ultrasound

ultrasound

Transcranial ultrasound demonstrates hydrocephalus and a large intraventricular mass located in the trigone of the lateral ventricle on the left.

The child went on to have a ventriculoperitoneal shunt inserted.

CT brain

ct

CT obtained following insertion of a right sided VP shunt demonstrates a large vividly enhancing intraventricular mass, located at the trigone of the lateral ventricle on the left.

A biopsy was carried out and the child was imaged again a couple of months later.

MRI brain 2 months later

mri

MRI obtained only 2 month later demonstrates the mass to have markedly increased in size with intraventricular and leptomeningeal spread. The 4th ventricle is now trapped and ballooned.

Case Discussion

Features are consistent with a choroid plexus carcinoma, even though the initial appearance would have also been consistent with a choroid plexus papilloma. The diagnosis was confirmed histologically. The child passed away shortly after the last scan.
