Chronic pulmonary embolism

Case contributed by Dr Chris O'Donnell

Elderly lady with recurrent episodes of breathlessness

Patient Data

Age: 85
Gender: Female

Irregular mass arising from the antero-inferior wall consistent with adherent thrombus in the right main pulmonary artery and lower lobe branches.  This should be contrasted with acute embolism that acts as a filling defect in the lumen.   It can sometimes calcify and present clinically as pulmonary hypertension.
