Unusual progressive diffuse subgaleal soft tissue swelling and oedema without significant inflammatory changes of the overlying subcutaneous fat. No intracranial abscess identified and no bone destruction. Little overall meningeal enhancement identified. Thin rim of peripheral enhancement. The appearances presumably represent a subgaleal effusion or abscess.
Patient went to theatre and underwent an incision and drainage which demonstrated extensive purulent material. Cultures grew strep pyogenes.
