Incidental finding in the right kidney.
Patient Data
Right kidney upper pole cortical heterogeneously enhancing mass.
The right kidney upper moiety nodule has been identified by ultrasound and a safe approach with the patient laying on his left side was considered. US-guided core biopsy using a 19/18G co-axial needle was performed. No complications.
Case Discussion
Typical imaging features of a renal cell carcinoma. The clear cell or conventional type of RCC represents 70-80% of the cases.
MACROSCOPIC DESCRIPTION: "(R) kidney mass": Five tissue core fragments with length ranging from 3mm to 7mm.
MICROSCOPIC DESCRIPTION: Several of these cores are made up of sheets of clear cells with slight nuclear size and shape variation and with single nucleoli which are generally not prominent.
DIAGNOSIS: "(R) kidney mass": Renal clear cell carcinoma of usual type (grade I out of IV, WHO).
