Closed loop small bowel obstruction

Vomiting, abdominal pain and distension.

Patient Data

Age: 40 years
Gender: Female

Dilated small bowel loops reacting 3.6 cm in caliber. Collapsed stomach with gastric tube seen. Two closely related collapsed bowel loops seen at the right iliac region. Distally collapsed terminal ileum as well as collapsed large bowel. Associated mild to moderate free intraperitoneal collection. No associated bowel ischemia, no associated vascular compromise.

Case Discussion

Features of closed-loop small bowel obstruction (SBO). It occurs when two separate points along the small bowel are obstructed at a common point. There is a high risk of bowel strangulation and infarction.
