Cochlear schwannoma

Case contributed by Dr Andrew Lawson

Presentation

Left sided hearing loss.

Patient Data

Age: 60
Gender: Male
Modality: MRI

The overall size and morphology of the avidly enhancing left cochlear schwannoma starting at the basal turn of the left cochlea and extending to the apical turn is unchanged from the previous imaging performed 1 year ago. The schwannoma does not demonstrate extension into the left internal auditory canal. The signal intensity within the left -sided semicircular canals is unchanged. The right internal auditory canal and inner ear structures appear unremarkable.

Case Discussion

Schwannomas can occur across the body. Common sites include the vestibulocochlear and facial nerves.

MR is the imaging modality of choice and usually has characteristic appearances regardless of the location.
