Colloid cyst causing hydrocephalus

Presentation

Acute onset frontal headache with associated slurred speech, confusion and ataxia.

Patient Data

Age: 40 years
Gender: Female

Hydrocephalus of the lateral ventricles with a 12 mm rounded hyperdense lesion centered on the third ventricle.
Generalized sulcal effacement within the supratentorial brain.
No transependymal edema.
Basal cisterns unremarkable.

Appearances are of obstructive hydrocephalus secondary to colloid cyst.

Case Discussion

The patient was transferred to neurosurgery and external ventricular drain placed.
Subsequent resection of the lesion demonstrated pathology of colloid cyst.

Colloid cysts are benign lesions typically centered on the foramen of Monro. They are typically asyptomatic, however can present with symptoms when causing hydrocephalus as in this case.
