Colobomatous cyst

Case contributed by Dr Prashant Gupta

Swelling in left orbit since birth, recent increase in size

Patient Data

Age: 25
Gender: Male

There is a well defined intraconal cyst in the inferior orbit with a microphthalmic globe. It is closely related to the posterior globe and optic nerve head.

no obvious communication could be made out with the globe

Case Discussion

This condition is also known as microphthalos with cyst

It occurs due to failure of closure of optic fissure and resultant herniation of vitreous. The usual location is inferior to orbit and defect is seen in posterior globe or optic nerve head.

Differentiation of Colobomatous cyst has to be made from a congenital cystic eye in which the globe is replaced by cysts and hence not visualized.
